The Canadian Internet Registration Authority is the organization that manages all .CA domains, and we’re thrilled they’ve decided to join our Ottawa Green Business Online community! We spoke to Jaclyn Bates, who is leading CIRA’s green team about what sustainability means to her.
Can you tell us a little bit about your role in your organization, and why you think sustainability is important?
I am an Administrative Coordinator as well as the lead for our Green Team, which is a diverse group of environmentally conscious co-workers. We lead sustainability efforts in the workplace to foster awareness and engagement. When surveyed, the majority of employees agreed that CIRA’s commitment to corporate sustainability is important to them.
What do you think the biggest challenges are for businesses/organizations like yours going green?
For organizations such as ours, it can be a good idea to prioritize reducing GHG emissions from data centres and business travel. Collecting complete and accurate data is very helpful to accomplish this in an accountable way.
What inspires you to push for climate action in your work and personal life?
As a purpose-driven and stewardship-focused organization, CIRA’s environmental sustainability efforts are an extension of its mission and vision. I also feel a personal responsibility and I am fortunate to have the opportunities and resources to do what I can to respect nature.
What is your favourite green product, service, or workplace/lifestyle tip?
We recently offered a Conscious Sourcing Catalogue to all of our staff as a resource for finding diverse Canadian suppliers. This guide helps to highlight sustainable options as well as intersecting socially responsible businesses and services.
